Healthy food is one of the biggest considerations for parents when they’re selecting a child care centre and the reason why at Great Beginnings we place so much emphasis on fresh, seasonal menus.
Our centre chefs are all highly experienced in the nutritional needs of growing young bodies and clever ways to get fussy eaters to try new flavours and textures.
While each centre follows healthy eating guidelines we like to let our chefs express their creativity with menus based on the availability of local produce and the dietary needs of our wonderful mix of children.
And while it’s the children who are the ultimate judges of our efforts in the kitchen it’s great to get outside recognition.
Centre Manager Erin Judge was delighted with the award and has put the $500 towards buying herbs and vegetables for the children to plant in garden beds as part of the sustainability program.
“It’s really important to establish healthy eating patterns early in life for the children’s physical and mental wellbeing,” said Erin. “Erica has already won over the children with her inventive and healthy meals and now that we’ve started our own vege patch we expect to see them get even more excited about eating what they grow.”
The garden not only encourages children to eat their greens, but it also forms an important part of the centre’s STEAM program – science, technology, engineering, arts and maths.
Planting a seed, watching it sprout and grow into delicious food to eat, is a great way to introduce children to science and the ecology of plants. Learning through play – and planting.
